Are feelings of low self worth preventing you from leading the life you want?

Self - esteem is an opinion we have of ourselves and our abilities. A healthy self - esteem can help us lead a life full of opportunities and low self -esteem, on the contrary, can hinder our ability to lead a life filled with joy.

Our self - esteem determines how we relate to the world.

Low self esteem can impact us in a number of different ways.

Research shows that people with high self - esteem focus on growth and achievement and people with low self - esteem focus on avoiding mistakes. This determines the decisions that we make, whether we choose to do something (taking a job, starting a relationship with a particular person or spending time with a specific group of friends) out of desire to do so and because this opportunity or person feels right to us or we choose a job, a circle of friends, a relationship because it feels like a "safe option" but that isn't what we truly want.

People with low self - esteem are more distressed by failure and tend to exaggerate events as being negative, according to research. What this can mean is it can become harder to stick at something for a long time, to be "new" at something and learn and make mistakes. Emotional resilience tends to be lower, making it more difficult to meet the life's challenges and self - actualize one's potential.

Manifestations of low self - esteem can include:

Seeing yourself in a negative light and saying negative things about yourself (I am stupid, I can't do anything right, I'm a bad person, etc.)

Having low confidence in your ability to accomplish things you desire

Thinking you don't deserve good things, to enjoy yourself, to have good loving supportive relationships

Feeling that everyone else is better than you

Ignoring all the successes you've had and focusing on all the mistakes you've made

Blaming yourself for when things go wrong

Taking more than your share of responsibility in relationships, jobs, etc.

...Among many more

There are many different aspects to working with self - esteem and as a person centered therapist I focus on getting to know you as a unique person with your own worldview and a perspective. We build a treatment plan collaboratively based on what works for you. I am trained in a number of different modalities (please see for more information on About Me page) that we can integrate into our work and I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship and alliance is key to making changes. I offer an empathic safe therapeutic space where you can gently connect to yourself at your pace.
